Frequently Asked Questions

What is a NOTAM?

NOTAM stands for "Notice to Air Missions" (previously "Notice to Airmen"). These are official notices issued by aviation authorities to alert people about temporary changes or hazards in the airspace. Think of them as real-time bulletins about what's happening in the sky above you.

NOTAMs can include information about:

  • Military exercises or drone operations in your area
  • Airshow and special event flight restrictions
  • Temporary flight restrictions (like VIP movements or emergencies)
  • New obstacles like construction cranes or wind turbines
  • Airport and runway closures
Who is this app for?

NOTAM App is designed for anyone curious about airspace activity in their area - you don't need to be a pilot or aviation professional to use it!

  • Drone operators: Know when and where flight restrictions apply before you fly
  • Aviation enthusiasts: Track interesting aerial activities like airshows, military exercises, or special flights
  • Researchers & journalists: Monitor airspace activity for stories or studies
  • Curious locals: Find out why there's unusual aircraft activity in your area
  • Event planners: Check for airspace restrictions that might affect outdoor events
What is a FIR and how do I add one?

A FIR (Flight Information Region) is simply a defined area of airspace, usually covering a country or large region. Each FIR has a four-letter code - for example, LRBB covers Romania, EGTT covers London/UK, and KZNY covers New York.

To add a region to your watchlist:

  • Open the app and go to the region management section
  • Tap the "+" or "Add Region" button
  • Search by country name, city, or the four-letter code if you know it
  • Select the region from the results to start tracking it

You can add multiple regions to monitor airspace activity across different areas - great if you travel or have interests in multiple locations.

How do notifications work?

NOTAM App sends push notifications to keep you informed about important airspace changes in your selected regions:

  • Get notified when new notices are published for areas you're watching
  • Important events (like airspace closures or major restrictions) trigger immediate alerts
  • Customize what types of notices you want to hear about in settings
  • Turn notifications on or off for each region individually

Make sure notifications are enabled in your device settings for the app to send you alerts.

What do the severity colors mean?

Notices are color-coded to help you quickly spot what matters most:

  • Red - Critical: Major events like airspace closures, active military operations, or emergency restrictions. If you're a drone operator, definitely pay attention to these.
  • Orange - High: Significant activity like large-scale exercises, VIP movements, or notable hazards in the area.
  • Yellow - Moderate: Notable changes like temporary restrictions, new obstacles (cranes, wind turbines), or scheduled activities.
  • Green - Low: General information like minor changes, routine maintenance notices, or informational updates.
How often is data refreshed?

The app updates automatically so you always have current information:

  • Data refreshes every 15 minutes while you're using the app
  • Pull down on the list to manually refresh anytime
  • Critical notices may trigger push notifications between refresh cycles
  • All information comes from official aviation authorities

Look for the timestamp at the top of the notice list to see when the data was last updated.

I'm a drone operator - how can this app help me?

NOTAM App is an essential tool for responsible drone flying. Before you fly, check the app to see if there are any:

  • Temporary flight restrictions (TFRs): Areas temporarily off-limits due to events, emergencies, or VIP movements
  • Military exercises: Active training areas where manned aircraft may be operating at low altitudes
  • Special events: Airshows, sporting events, or concerts that create no-fly zones
  • New obstacles: Recently erected structures like cranes or wind turbines

Set up notifications for your local region so you're always aware of new restrictions that could affect your flights.

Note: This app is for awareness only. Always check official sources and local regulations before flying.
